CHEERS TO THE SUNSHINE

It’s amazing what a little sunshine can do to the attitude. It’s time to crawl out of the dark cave, rub winter away and find some fun.

We’ve even had a few rain-free days sprinkled here and there to make us believe that we can sit out on a patio and soak in some fresh air. Happy Hour seems like a good a place to start, and you’ll be able to fill your dance card downtown pretty quickly.

OK, we won’t pretend to have an all-encompassing list, but a few places around downtown gave us the scoop of what’s on tap and what’s coming out of the kitchen for the after-work crowd. You might even want to knock off a little early to take full advantage.

Start by sampling a handcrafted pint from The Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus Monday – Friday for just 2.50 from 3-7 p.m., but if a frosty one isn’t your cup of tea, sip on 2.50 well cocktails and house wines and don’t forget to saddle up to the bar for 5.00 appetizers.

The Flat Iron is sporting a newly remodeled patio with 5.00 martinis and 2.00 well drinks and domestic beers from 4-7 p.m.

Special drink pricing and buy-one-get-one-free appetizers give you a lot of leeway at Latitude 41, Monday – Thursday, 5-6:30 p.m. It’s a perfect place to cool off on the shady patio in the toasty summer temps.

When you head out to our little oasis of Gay Street, check out Plantain Café for their 2.00 tacos from 3-6 p.m. And while you’re strolling around, make sure to hit Tip Top Kitchen and Cocktails, Due Amici and J. Gumbo’s as you kick back and enjoy some time with friends after work. 

Lexi’s on Third has a happy hour menu that includes drinks and eats that will keep you coming back for more. You might just find a new home on their spacious patio. Go ahead… Eat, Drink and Be Social.

And don’t forget to stop in and say hi to the other new kid on the block at Quarthouse. Fill your gut with 25 cent jumbo wings and wash them down with a cool one. You’ll find 2.00 domestics, 3.00 imports and 3.00 well drinks. Or try out Quarthouse’s sister location; Ringside Cafe will mix it up a bit with the same drink specials.

That’s a lot of places to hit. Probably makes you hot and tired just thinking about it. You might even need to cool off with a drink. So, here are a few more places you might want to check out…

Gorgeous weather at the Market!  Fall is what Ohio does best, in my opinion.  In case you missed it, Tuesday was Squash Day.  The Market Sample Booth had all sorts of goodies out, including lemon and yellow squash cupcakes, chilled squash soup and little acorn squash cakes.  It was fabulous and you can find the recipes here!  The next special day at the Market is September 28 when Barrio’s chef cooks for shoppers in the Ohio Proud Mobile Kitchen.  If you haven’t been to one yet, you should definitely come out to this one.

Tuesday we were also treated to the musical styling of The Willie Phoenix Band.  I’ve seen his name around town and finally got the chance to listen.  They are fantastic!  They play all over town and are worth the night out to go see them play somewhere.  You can also find them on iTunes.

I ended up spending more money than I had budgeted out for this week because a new vendor arrived.  Aboxa Fudge claims to be the best fudge you will ever eat, and I think they are right about that.  This Dublin-based company doesn’t use preservatives, artificial colors or sweeteners in their fudge.  Your fudge comes in this cute little box that you can bring back for a discount on your next box.  And if you try it once, there will be another box.

TAKE A TOUR AND ENJOY A COCKTAIL

It’s hot and humid, and while Columbus may not offer up salty ocean breezes to lower the mercury on the thermometer, downtown antes up plenty of ways to cool off with frosty mugs and chilled cocktails all over town, all times of day.  Besides, it’s gotta be 5 p.m. somewhere in the world, right?  So, take a tour via one of these local hang outs.  But it’s not all-inclusive so let us know your favorite get-away.

Bartenders at Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails get the party started within minutes of arrival, and if you have any doubts, try one of their signature drinks like Commit to be Lit.  After a little bit of this concoction made with orange, vanilla and raspberry vodkas mixed with cranberry juice and a splash of 7-Up, you may never need to sit seaside again.

Sans the Manolo Blahnik’s and the four sassy chicks of Sex in the City, the Caucus Cosmo at the Double Tree Caucus Room provides a perfect way to relax after a long day at the office.

Travel on down to Barrio and pitchers of house-made white and red sangria, half off during happy hour from 4 – 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Grab a few tapas to share and you have created a vacation celebration without leaving the city.

Take the Elevator to kick the party into full swing with their $2.50 handcrafted pints from 3 – 7 p.m. every Monday through Friday, but don’t watch your clock in this historical building – their menu of beer and cocktails will make you forget the time, which is the point of resting seaside.

If you are still in need of a history lesson while you toss back a cold one, visit the Jury Room.  This neighborhood tavern has been serving up food and spirits since 1831.  You don’t even need to crack open a book to take advantage of the free appetizer buffet on Wednesdays and Fridays during happy hour, but you might want to grab a napkin.

Get Uncorked with half-price bottles and champagne at Due Amici on Monday nights and be-bop to live jazz beginning at 6 p.m.

Michael O’Toole’s continues the family tradition of the first O’Toole immigrant who settled in Southeastern Ohio serving up frothy cold ones to the miners who labored long days in the foothills of the Appalachians.  But you just need to head down to Nationwide Boulevard to take advantage of this Irish-style pub, or walk on ever to The Flatiron for a Chocolate Martini.  Heck, the night is young so check ‘em all out.

Wrap up your summer cocktail tour with the high-spirited Drunken Chunky Blonde from Sugardaddy’s, but don’t worry – you can even drive home after munching on this one.  The dense, chewy blonde is like a chocolate chip cookie on steroids with its premium chocolate chunks and toasted pecans.  A splash of bourbon essence mixed into the batter will have you jonesing for more.

Thanks to all of you who voted for your flav-o-favs!  With hundreds of votes cast, J. Gumbo’s fell short of the winner’s spot by a mere three votes, with Jack’s Diner, last year’s Show Your Love winner, and Burgers Dogs and Fries in hot pursuit.

Now the love showing worked both ways.  By voting for their favorite lunch spot, food fans were entered to win free lunches from our featured downtown restaurants: Barrio, Burgers Dogs and Fries, Caffe Daniela, Dirty Frank’s, J. LOVE ‘EM UP

Time flies: it’s been a full year since DowntownColumbus.com’s Show Your Love project launched.  Back in 2009, six local eateries joined in a good natured contest to become Downtown’s Official Sweetheart.

The competition was brutal.  The love was intense.  Ultimately, Jack’s Diner emerged as number one.

But it can be number one for only one year.  Jack’s reign has ended.  Although we still love the joint, it’s time to find 2010’s Official Sweetheart.

Just like last year, we’ve sweetened the deal for the voting public.  Cast a ballot for your favorite eatery and you’re automatically registered for a set of gift certificates from all the competitors: Barrio Tapas Lounge; Burgers Dogs and Fries; Caffe Daniela; Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace; J. Gumbo’s; and Plantain Cafe.  Vote early and vote often.

(Sigh)… and it seemed like just yesterday when Jack’s claimed its award.

EDITOR’S NOTE: It was yesterday.  SOMEBODY kept hoarding Jack’s award plaque in our office.  Oops.

CAPITAL CROSSROADS SID ANNUAL AWARDS

Each year at its Annual Meeting in November, Capital Crossroads recognizes people and companies in a variety of categories.  Listed below are the winners in each category, including Ambassador of the Year, Outstanding Service, Aesthetic Contribution and Outstanding Achievement.

Marissa Ingram was awarded Ambassador of the Year, for her outstanding work and her wide range of experience and skills.  As an ambassador since 2002, Ingram has served in a variety of capacities and has a detailed knowledge of downtown which makes her a valuable asset as an ambassador and as a trainer for other ambassadors.

The SID’s Award for Outstanding Aesthetic Contribution recognizes a project in the past year which adds to the beauty, street life, energy, brightness and attractiveness of downtown.    The 2009 honoree is the new restaurant, Barrio Tapas Lounge.  In addition to being a great restaurant, the project humanizes an intersection that was lifeless.  The restaurant’s windows open, allowing the energy of the restaurant to spill out onto the sidewalks; they also offer sidewalk dining.  Jeff Mathes and Sam Horner accepted the award for their outstanding aesthetic contribution.

The Outstanding Service Award recognizes the public or private sector entity that makes a significant contribution to downtown.  The first-time winner of this award is Ric Rossetti of the Public Service Department.  As the man who runs the Public Service Department permit office, he is on the front lines every time someone needs a permit to work or place something in the public right of way.  Ric handles this demanding job with patience and grace, always providing responsive and excellent customer service.

A second award for Outstanding Service in 2009 was presented to the Columbus Downtown Dog Park Association, whose four founding members, Janet Berry, Suzanne DeWoody, Mary Jane Gerhardstein and Liz Leahy, shared a passion and commitment for dogs and for downtown.  They started with a mission to establish an off-leash dog exercise area close to urban housing, and this year with support from the City, the first Downtown Columbus Dog Park opened at the corner of Fourth and Spring streets.  The group continues their work and hopes to open additional dog parks downtown.

The final award presented was that for Outstanding Achievement for an accomplishment by a property owner, city division, tenant or civic organization that deserved special recognition.  This year that accomplishment was a real home run: the Huntington Ball Park.  This wonderful facility debuted in the spring, enhancing the Arena District and drawing more visitors to that growing area of our city.  Capital Crossroads isn’t the only organization to recognize this outstanding amenity.  Baseballparks.com named Huntington Ball Park the ballpark of the year, beating out the new parks opened by both the Yankees and the Mets.  The award was presented to the Franklin County Commissioners at a meeting in early December.

BELLY UP TO THE BARRIO

Fans of the Biggie have hit hard times in Downtown Columbus.  Long gone are the days of double dipping at the dueling downtown Wendy’s.  No more Biggie Cokes, Biggie Fries or Triple Bacon Cheeseburgers.

On the bright side, a new joint named Barrio has debuted in the building-formerly-known-as-Wendy’s at Spring and High.  It offers up Spanish cuisine.  Sounds scary?  Actually, there’s lots of solace there for the burger crowd…

1.  Where’s the Beef?
There’s plenty of it on the menu, including Brocheta de Carne – a beef skewer made with tenderloin.

2.  Need a Frosty Fix?
The dessert menu offers a couple of superior consolations:  Jeni’s Ice Cream and Flourless Chocolate Cake.

3.  Miss the Premium Fish Sandwich this Lent?
At least Barrio doesn’t have raw fish.  Actually… the ceviche would be considered, by many standards, raw fish.  But Barrio has grilled salmon too.

Barrio serves lunch and dinner daily, and brunch on Sundays.

PS:  This is a great week to eat out everyday and save money; it’s Restaurant Week for local independent operators.  That means extra special bargains for downtown diners at Tip Top, Due Amici, Columbus Brewing Company and Elevator Brewery.  Hurry up!  The bargains end March 15.
