Main Street Bridge


The famous bridges of Madison County are great, but...

The Main Street Bridge is the first inclined, single-rib tied arch bridge in the whole United States. AND it’s only the fifth inclined arch superstructure on the face of the planet.

 

That makes it truly . . . unique.  And it’s well on its way to being breathtakingly beautiful too.  Expected to debut in October of 2009, it boasts big sweeping lines that make it a gorgeous addition to the downtown landscape.


Looks aren’t everything, though.  It’s the perfect way to traverse the Scioto River, no matter what your mode of transportation. The bridge will sport an 18-foot-wide walkway for pedestrians and cyclists, and a 35-foot-wide three-lane deck for vehicle traffic.

 

The City of Columbus and the Ohio Department of Transportation targeted the Main Street Bridge as a key structure for enhancing both downtown transportation and the City skyline. The original bridge, an art deco-inspired design, was constructed in 1937 and closed in 2002. The new bridge will be constructed of 3,765 tons of steel and 6,690 cubic yards of concrete and is expected to open in June of 2010
