Capital Crossroads SID
It takes special effort to become a great place to live, work, relax and have fun.
And for the 38-square-block area of downtown between the Convention Center and I-70, that special effort took on a new form in 2001 with the creation of Capital Crossroads SID (Special Improvement District).
This private-sector organization is voluntarily funded by more than 500 property owners with the primary purpose of making downtown the cleanest, safest and most attractive commercial area in central Ohio.
Capital Crossroads promotes downtown with initiatives such as Pearl Market, Downtown Live and the Capitol Square kickball league. And, in keeping with the organization’s mission, downtown ambassadors provide safety and cleaning services to the District seven days a week, 356 days a year.
Like other SIDs or BIDs (Business Improvement Districts), Capital Crossroads SID is made up of area property owners, both commercial and residential, who voluntarily agree to assess themselves in order to fund a wide range of services in common areas. This can include cleaning and maintenance, safety and security, outreach, marketing and promotions, and special events. Property owners determine every aspect of the plan for services, including the types of services offered and length of term. Because a SID assessment is similar to a property tax, SIDs require legislative authorization by the local government.
